Paper and Board Technology

Technical investigation, development and support for the pulp, paper and converting industries

For 70 years Pira and its predecessors have been a centre of knowledge and expertise for paper and board manufacture and end-use. Now, through our associates, we can add pulp technology to our portfolio in recognition of the importance of renewable materials.

Our services include:

  • Strategic market insights
  • Pulp and raw material optimisation
  • Product performance
  • Papermaking process development
  • Coatings development
  • Converting and corrugating optimisation
  • Recycling investigations
  • Environmental solutions

Our strength is our understanding of the connection between sheet structure and product performance in end-use. This extends up-stream to both virgin and recycled fibre and to filler effects. Pira's practical approach is underpinned by applied research into fibre properties and sheet structure. Our technical resources are reinforced by our Strategic Market and Business Intelligence functions to provide a unique breadth and depth of support for your business.

We understand your business from the development of an idea to the evaluation of a completed product. Pira combines knowledge, experience and inventiveness with integrity, thoroughness and objectivity. We can supply both extra resources and extra knowledge to bring a product to fruition, save time and reduce risk. We can work at your site or at Pira.

Multi-client project invitation to particpate: Fundamentals of fibre bonding

Pira is offering the opportunity for a limited number of sponsors to join with us in a collaborative project with a leading international centre for the nanoanalysis of surfaces in order to develop new means of quantifying fibre surface properties. The outcomes would be equally relevant to virgin, recycled and engineered fibres. Click to see the project proposal. It will start in September 2010 and run for four years. Case Studies

  • Recyclability of surface-sized grades

Pira has long been active in the development of surface sizing formulations for improved image quality for uncoated woodfree papers. The question is how to demonstrate that the surface treatments did not impair the recyclability of the treated papers?
