This research has now been updated. A new report is available titled The Future of Digital Printing to 2021 and YOU CAN SAVE £375 until 31 August 2011.
_______________________________________________________________________________
The printing press of the future will be totally digital. Toner and inkjet technologies are advancing rapidly and are poised to replace a significant proportion of gravure, flexo, and litho presses by 2015.
In 1996, digital colour printing was still in its infancy. Worldwide there were only a few hundred systems installed by early printing pioneers. The percentage of all print that was digitally printed was unmeasurably small. Yet within a decade, digital printing in all of its forms has snatched over 10 percent of all printing worldwide and is growing. Within the next few years, major breakthroughs in sheet size, speed, and capability will propel digital printing into the mainstream of print reproduction, challenging offset litho, just as offset litho challenged letterpress from 1960 to 1980. This will affect press manufacturers, print consumables suppliers, and especially establishments offering printing services. This report investigates the state of digital printing, primarily for high-speed production, and projects its growth, change, and impact to the year 2015.
