Pira believes that while office paper consumption is declining and will continue to decline, demand, albeit reduced demand will continue for the foreseeable future. Electronic storage and distribution of information has increased dramatically and compared with Pira's earlier research in 2006, end users now have more confidence in digital communication and records. But many still have an emotional need for hard copies and there continues to be much individual/personal printing of hard copies. Having information in hard copy, as opposed to on-screen, is thought to facilitate better human processing of information.

This multi-client evaluates the impact of changes in office practices and commercial transactions brought about by new technology on the current and future demand for paper. The study will take into consideration demographic and geographic factors, economic trends, technology developments, changes in business practices, environmental factors, attitudes and use of information technology, speed of adoption and supply and demand balance.

The programme is based upon a combination of desk research, telephone interviews and in-depth expert interviews along with focus groups used to obtain information on which a set of scenarios have been built.
