Evaluation of the Opportunities for Technology Transfer in the European Paper Industry
29 April 2009
Challenge
To determine whether the paper industry was a suitable market for transfer of a different approach to maintenance and engineering protocols developed by the client and successfully adopted by other manufacturing sectors outside the paper industry.
Approach
Primary research targeted to provide a representation of the views of key papermaking groups in Europe using a questionnaire, agreed with the client, and translated into relevant languages. Interviews were conducted with chief engineers, engineering directors and managers.
The interviews established the current approach to maintenance within the various mill groups and the receptiveness to new approaches and new ideas. Most promising groups were identified and meetings set up with client and papermills to present approach and establish potential of each of the papermaking groups as a customer.
Recommendations
Papermaking groups offering the most potential were identified and introduced to client.
Benefits
The client's lead-time to enter a new, unknown market was substantially reduced and introductions to prospective clients established at a high entry level.
