Revenues from banknote printing set to grow 7% annually to 2014

09 July 2009

Leatherhead, UK July 9, 2009. Revenues from banknote printing are set to grow 7% annually to 2014 according to a major new study by Pira International. The Future of Banknote Printing predicts that current the financial crisis will see a huge investment in banknote printing as banks try to maintain confidence in cash.

Providing unique quantitative market sizes and forecasts to 2014 on this traditionally secretive industry, the study estimates the current banknote printing market at €2.3 billion for printing materials and €0.5 billion for printing processes.

Major opportunities are also revealed in security printing technologies. New equipment required for the application of diffractive optically variable image devices (DOVIDs) such as hot-stamping foil, spark optically variable magnetic ink (OVMI), laser engraving tools, digitalisation of design and prepress, automatic inspection, etc. has resulted in substantial growth in the printing technology market and this growth is forecast to continue to 2014.

"The global financial crisis will trigger a huge re-investment in banknote printing security and opportunities for security providers," according to publisher Adam Page. "It is all about confidence in the cash cycle and this cash cycle is blossoming as never before, in spite of 1970s predictions about electronic funds transfer and paperless societies."

Production costs are expected to receive intense scrutiny over the next couple of years as recession-ridden rich-world economies step up banknote printing well beyond planned levels. Compared to the past five years, the study predicts banknote printers will experience far greater pressure to contain costs and maintain a highly secure product.

''Renowned, trusted financial institutions have gone into liquidation; others have been shored up by their governments at the cost of billions of dollars, pounds and euros, shredding public faith in the economic establishment. In this climate of uncertainty and betrayed trust, discovery of wide-scale banknote counterfeiting would cause chaos.'' explains Page.

Authored by a team of international security printing experts, The Future of Banknote Printing is based on extensive primary research and proprietary data gathered over many decades working in the security printing industry.

The study provides in-depth quantitative data and analysis of banknote printing materials and processes broken down by security technology and region, with forecast growth to 2014. It is designed to help those operating in the currency field meet today's challenges as well as target opportunities in key sectors over the next five years.

The Future of Banknote Printing is available at £3500. For further information please contact Stephen Hill on +44 (0)1372 802025 or contact us online
