Measuring the recycling rate of UK magazines
07 January 2010
Challenge
The UK magazine and business media industry has a turnover of more than £6 billion and directly employs 114,000 people. In 2005, the Periodical Publishers Association (PPA), one of the leading magazine trade bodies worldwide, agreed magazine recycling targets with Government to raise the level of post consumer magazine recycling to 70% by 2013.
Over the past 4 years, Pira has worked with the PPA to measure post consumer magazine recycling rates in the UK.
The PPA exceeded this target in 2008 with a level of 72%.
Approach
Working with the PPA, Pira developed a robust methodology to map the magazine material flows in the UK. The magazine fibre flow model identifies the major material and magazine inputs across the supply chain from printer, through to publisher and on to final customer and eventual recycling or disposal.
Pira carries out a detailed physical analysis of the magazine content in post consumer News and Pams and Mixed Paper grades at major newsprint manufacturers and depots collecting and baling Mixed Paper in the UK. Over 9 tonnes of recovered paper are analysed using accepted 'Ingede test methods' in order to obtain statistically sound data.
Benefits
Recycling magazines back into to valuable paper products such as newsprint, tissue and packaging makes sense - it meets the triple bottom line by improving the economy, it reduces environmental impact and it creates jobs. Over 95% of UK households are now served by kerb-side collection of recyclables, including paper. Pira's work has supported the PPA initiative to increase magazine recycling rates. In addition, the surveys have provided magazine publishers with valuable feedback on the profile of recycled magazines including category and age as well as how long it takes before a magazine enters the recycling stream.
In order to continue to raise recycling levels, publishers are being encouraged to use the WRAP Recyclenow logo.
